FILTERS AND FUEL LINES
Water contamination of the fuel occurs due to condensation in the fuel tank
itself and occurs much more frequently during humid weather. Keeping the
tank topped up at all times where practical is a good practice as this helps
minimise the effects of condensation. Draining the water from the fuel filters
(see Figure 5.4a and 5.4b), changing the fuel filters and the engine-hour
intervals at which this is to take place are all covered in the fuel filters and
engine manufacturer manuals. The cleanliness of the fuel for efficient and
reliable operation of the engines cannot be overstated and it is the duty of
the owner of the vessel to ensure that this is maintained at the highest level
at all times. Regularly inspect fuel lines for any evidence of chafe, etc., and
take precautions to eliminate this.
At the recommended engine service intervals, replace the used filter with
a new item.
In the event of an emergency due to dirty fuel that is affecting engine
performance, renew the filters at the first opportunity and investigate the
cause of the dirty fuel.
If travelling to locations where fuel quality is suspect, we strongly
recommend the installation of a full fuel-polishing system. Your dealer
can offer further options.
