All the underwater metal parts are protected against galvanic corrosion by an
internal bonding system back to the sacrificial zinc anodes (see Figure 5.6a)
located on the transom under the marlin board. These should never be
painted and must be replaced when more than 60% eroded. Note that
anodes may also be fitted individually to underwater equipment.
Additionally to the sacrificial anodes the Maritimo C47 has an Active
Corrosion Protection ACP system installed that offers highly efficient
corrosion protection to IPS installations (see Figure 5.6b). This system
senses the electrical potential of the surrounding water and sends a signal
to the control unit, which in turn sends an appropriate current to the
active anode. This anode then emits varying levels of ions into the water
surrounding the drives to protect them.
Since the ACP is a fully integrated part of the Electronic Vessel Control
EVC system, the corrosion protection status can easily be obtained via
the EVC display.
