4.1
INTRODUCTION
The safety of persons on board the vessel is paramount and is the
responsibility of the master of the vessel. It is his duty to oversee all safety
equipment and satisfy himself that it complies with relevant statutory
regulations and that all persons have been instructed in its location and use
in the event of an emergency. The decision to proceed in adverse conditions
needs to be balanced with experience and confidence in both his and the
boat’s ability.
4.2
SAFETY EQUIPMENT
The selection and carriage of the correct safety apparatus to satisfy statutory
requirements is best done in consultation with your dealer. If the boat is to
be used off shore, then it will need additional equipment to that necessary
for enclosed waters. Remember, it is the responsibility of the master to make
sure the boat carries the correct safety apparatus, that it is in a serviceable
condition, and that all persons on board are aware of its location and have
been shown how to use it. A lot of safety items have a ‘replace by’ date and
this should be noted in the ship’s log to alert the master of impending expiry.
Much on-board safety is simply a matter of common sense. Do not store
combustible material in areas of heat or potential fire. Never carry portable
gas cylinders in any confined space on the boat; they should always be
stored in one of the cockpit lockers.
4.3
GALLEY
The galley is one area where extra caution needs to be observed. The wake
of a passing vessel or simply wave action could cause the overturning of
cooking utensils filled with hot liquids and this could cause injury.
Never leave the craft unattended when cooking or using
heating appliances.
4.4
CARBON MONOXIDE
Carbon monoxide poisoning is caused by breathing the exhaust fumes of
internal combustion engines. We recommend the reading of the report on
carbon monoxide issued by the American Boat and Yacht Council.
