POWER INVERTER
A power inverter is a device that converts DC power at 24 volts to AC power
(see Figure 8.10). The inverter isolator switch for the inverter is located in the
battery master switch panel in the starboard side locker bin in the cockpit
(see Figure 8.9). Be aware that the output power from the inverter is just as
lethal to human life as AC shore power, and all the same precautions apply.
The inverter handbook should be thoroughly read and understood
before operating this equipment. Please be aware that it is
a complex piece of machinery. The inverter is fully protected
against overloading; if it is connected to a load that it is unable to
supply, it will, after five attempts, turn itself off and will not operate again until
it is manually reset by the operator. This is done by turning OFF the power to
the unit and then re-connecting.
When leaving the vessel, turn off the engine room lights, galley
fridge, inverter outlets on the AC switchboard to prevent drain
on the batteries through the inverter in the case of loss of
shore power.
