SAFE TRAILER TOWING GUIDELINES
Before towing, check coupling, safety chains, safety brake, tires, wheels and
lights.
Check the breakaway battery. Make sure it is fully charged.
Check the wheel lug nuts or bolts for tightness. 85-95 ft. /lbs.
Check coupler tightness after towing 50 miles (80km).
Adjust the brake controller to engage the trailer brakes before the tow vehicle
brakes.
Use your mirrors to verify that you have enough room to change lanes or pull into
traffic.
Use your turn signals well in advance.
Allow plenty of stopping distance for your trailer and tow vehicle.
Do not drive faster than the conditions will allow.
Allow plenty of room for passing. A rule of thumb is that passing distance with a
trailer is 4 times the passing distance without a trailer.
Use lower gears for climbing and descending grades.
Do not ride the brakes while descending grades; this can cause overheating and
potential brake failure.
Slow down for bumps in the road. Take your foot off the brake pedal when
crossing the bump.
Slow down prior to entering a curve; maintain a constant safe speed that allows
you to remain in control of your trailer. The towing vehicle will then remain in
control of the trailer.
Do not apply the tow vehicle brakes to correct extreme trailer swaying.
Continued pulling of the trailer, and even slight acceleration, or carefully applying
the trailer brakes (using the electronic brake controller) will provide a stabilizing
force.
