1. Safety
1.1. General safety information
It is strongly recommended that any personnel who are involved with the installation, operation or
maintenance of this laser equipment should first read and fully understand the contents of this manual.
If there are any questions or doubts on any of the safety aspects of the equipment, then do not hesitate
to contact your nearest Luxinar Aftersales office or distributor for advice before proceeding.
The installation, operation, maintenance and repair of this laser equipment must only be carried out by
Luxinar service personnel or trained staff who have received correct instruction concerning the hazards
associated with this particular equipment.
Take extensive precautions to prevent exposure of laser radiation to the eye and skin from either direct
or reflected laser beams. In addition, precautions must be taken to prevent the hazards of fire, electrical
injury and pollution.
The information and precautions given in this chapter are extensive but may not be complete. The
system integrator is advised to supplement this information with information regarding current
technical and regulatory advances as they become available.
Important!
All safety critical instructions contained within this document are framed with a border and
identified by CAUTION, WARNING or DANGER depending on the severity of the risk involved. In
addition, the safety symbol indicates that care should be taken when working with or on the
laser equipment.
Strict compliance with the safety precautions set out and referred to in this manual and extreme care in
use are essential to minimise the chance of accidental damage to the equipment or personal injury.
Luxinar does not accept liability for any damage or injury howsoever caused or arising.
The symbol given below is also used on the equipment and indicates that the user should refer to the
OEM equipment operator’s manual for more information on the safe operation or installation of the
equipment.
1.2. Laser radiation safety standards
The European standard for the Radiation Safety of Laser Products is EN60825-1:2014. Luxinar lasers are
designated as Class 4 and as such, the user should appoint a Laser Safety Officer who should be familiar
with the content of EN60825-1:2014. Special attention is drawn to EN60825-1:2014 Part 14: User’s
guide. This laser product is designated solely for use as a component laser and therefore does not meet
all the requirements of EN60825-1:2014.
The United States guidelines for the manufacture and subsequent sale of laser equipment are governed
by the Centre for Devices and Radiological Health (CDRH). The laser safety requirements are covered in
sub-chapter J of the Radiation Standards, 21 CFR. This laser product is designated solely for use as a
component laser and therefore does not meet all the requirements of 21 CFR 1040.10.
It is the responsibility of the buyer of these components to ensure that the final system sold to an end
user complies with all the relevant laser safety requirements prior to the sale of that system. The buyer
is also required to provide a system report filing to CDRH before the system is shipped to an end user.
The labels shown in section
are fitted to the equipment in the locations specified and must not be
removed or defaced. Immediately replace any missing labels.
The average output power, peak power per pulse, the pulsed frequency, the wavelength of the radiation
and other specifications for the laser(s) covered by this manual can be found in section
Luxinar laser control systems are designed in compliance with BS EN ISO 13849-1:2015 “Safety
requirements and guidance on the principles of design and integration of safety-related parts of control
systems”. The control system for the complete machine must also comply with this standard in order
