Use this procedure to remove the system board.
Attention:
Removing and installing this component requires trained technicians. Do no attempt to remove or
install it without proper training.
Before removing the system board:
1. Record all system configuration information, such as Lenovo XClarity Controller (XCC) IP addresses,
vital product data, and the machine type, model number, serial number, Universally Unique Identifier,
and asset tag of the server.
2. Use the Lenovo XClarity Essentials to save the system configuration to external media.
3. Save the system-event log to external media.
Note:
When replacing the system board, always update the server with the latest firmware or restore the
pre-existing firmware. Make sure that you have the latest firmware or a copy of the pre-existing firmware
before you proceed.
4. Read the safety information and installation guidelines (see “Safety” on page iii and “Installation
5. Turn off the server and peripheral devices and disconnect the power cords and all external cables (see
“Power off the server” on page 8).
6. If the server is installed in a rack, slide the server out on its rack slide rails to gain access to the top
cover, or remove the server from the rack.

8. Remove the top cover (see “Remove the top cover” on page 130).
To remove the system board, complete the following steps:
Step 1. Remove the fan cage assembly (see “Remove the fan cage assembly” on page 61).
Step 2. Remove the power supply unit(s) (see “Remove a hot-swap power supply unit” on page 93).
Step 3. Remove the system board air baffle (see “Remove the system board air baffle and the power
interposer” on page 116) or processor and memory expansion tray (see “Remove the processor
and memory expansion tray” on page 110).
Note:
There no need to remove the PHMs or DIMMs installed in the processor and memory
expansion tray before removing the expansion tray.
Step 4. Disconnect all cables from thesystem board. Make a list of each cable as you disconnect it and use
it as a checklist after installing the new system board.
Step 5. Remove all the DIMMs from the system board, and set them aside on a static-protective surface for
reinstallation (see “Remove a memory module” on page 79).
Note:
Make a note of the location of all the installed DIMMs for later reference. Refer to
ThinkSystem SR850 Memory Population Reference
if you’re adding more DIMMs.
