Install Cylinder Heads
NOTE: Cylinder heads must be attached with the
original type of mounting hardware, using
either hex flange screws, or mounting studs
with nuts and washers. The heads are
machined differently for studs than for
screws, so the fastening method cannot be
altered unless the heads are being replaced.
Do not intermix the components.
1. Check to make sure there are no nicks or burrs on
the sealing surfaces of the cylinder head or the
crankcase.

Valve Stem Seals
These engines use valve stem seals on the intake
valves and occasionally on the exhaust valves. Always
use a new seal whenever the valve is removed or if the
seal is deteriorated or damaged in any way. Never
reuse an old seal. Figure 11-37.
Assemble Cylinder Heads
Prior to installation, lubricate all components with
engine oil, paying particular attention to the lip of the
valve stem seal, valve stems and valve guides. Install
the following items in the order listed below using a
valve spring compressor. See Figures 11-38 and 11-39.
• Intake and exhaust valves
• Valve spring caps
• Valve springs
• Valve spring retainers
• Valve spring keepers
