find out who sang the number he could easily rear-end the car
ahead.
With parsing set to
1-Single,
Safe Scrolling marches the message
across the display screen one character at a time, just like sol-
diers passing a reviewing stand. Any message will require a
much longer transmission time in this mode, but a quick glance
at the radio display every ten to fifteen seconds still allows the
driver to get the full message without missing any words.
The scrolling modes represented by
2
through
7
simply expand
on this theme, moving the message by the selected number of
characters (and spaces) at a time.
‘Block’
Message
Transmission
When
Parse
is set to
8 - Block
, the incoming text is simply broken
into 8-character-and-space blocks with no regard to word breaks.
This mode is useful only if the messaging is pre-parsed by station
automation. When this mode is selected, a series of tic marks ap-
pears below the message entry area as an aid in manually parsing
a typed-in message, as was done in the illustration below.
THE DEFAULT SCROLLING-PS MESSAGE
The 730 Encoder includes a provision to transmit a default
scrolling message if the DPS field is not refreshed within a spe-
cified length of time. For example, the RDS serial or network
data link to the transmitter might fail, or the playout system or
third-party data consolidator might develop a problem that
would interrupt data transfer to the encoder. Rather than have
information about the last song transmitted indefinitely, a de-
fault scrolling message may be substituted following a reason-
able interval, maybe 3 minutes. This default message would
continue to be sent until the DPS field is refreshed when the da-
ta link is restored.
Click the
Tools
menu tab at the top of the
software screen and then click:
RT+ and De-
faults
. This brings up a secondary data-entry
screen. The field for entering a DPS default
message is at the bottom of this screen.
Note that the factory-default message already
in the
DPSDefault
field is grayed-out. To ena-
ble the default scrolling-message function, it
is first necessary to enter a time, in minutes,
into the
DPSTimer
box. The default
message is dis-
abled with a value
of zero.
