3. General
The information in the following chapters must be observed when installing Harmonic Drive
®
Products. Special versions
may differ in technical details from the following illustrations. In case of any uncertainties, it is strongly recommended to
contact Harmonic Drive SE, quoting the type designation and part number or serial number.
3.1 Intended use
Harmonic Drive
®
Products are intended for industrial or commercial applications.
Typical areas of application are robotics and handling, machine tools, semiconductor, medical equipment, wood working
machines, mobile systems, packaging and food machines and similar machines.
The products may only be operated within the operating ranges and environmental conditions shown in the
documentation.
Before commissioning of systems and machines including Harmonic Drive
®
Products, compliance with the Machinery
Directive must be established.
3.2 Improper use
The use of products outside the areas of application mentioned above or beyond the operating areas or environmental
conditions described in the documentation is considered as improper use.
If unsuitable products are installed or used in safety relevant applications, unintended operating conditions may occur
in the application that can injure persons and/or cause damage to property. The product may only be used in safety-
relevant applications if this use is expressly specified in the product documentation. Harmonic Drive SE accepts no
liability for damage caused by improper use. The risks of improper use lie solely with the user.
3.3 Use in special application areas
The use of the products in the following application areas requires a risk assessment and approval by Harmonic Drive
SE.

Areas at risk of explosion
•
Machines specially constructed or used for a nuclear purpose whose breakdown might lead to the emission of radio
activity

Vacuum
•
Household devices
•
Medical equipment
•
Devices which interact directly with the human body
•
Machines or equipment for transporting or lifting people
•
Special devices for use in fairgrounds or amusement parks
4. Safety instructions
4.1 Description of safety warning symbols

Explanation
DANGER
Indicates an imminent hazardous situation. If this is not avoided, death or serious injury could occur.
CAUTION
Indicates a possible hazard. Care should be taken or slight or minor injury may result.
Warning of a general hazard. The type of hazard is determined by the specific warning text.
Warning of dangerous electrical voltage and its effects.
Warning of hot surfaces.
Warning of suspended loads.
Precautions when handling electrostatic sensitive components.
Warning of electromagnetic environmental compatibility.
Risk of crushing and possible hand injuries.
