Safety Valves Type KSV/ÜSV and HD-KSV/HD-ÜSV

0 Introduction
These instructions are intended to assist the user in the installation, operation and maintenance of
pressure relief valves type KSV, HD-KSV and overflow safety valves type ÜSV, HD-ÜSV.
Failure to observe the following cautionary and warning notes
could lead to potential
hazards
and invalidate the manufacturer’s warranty.
If in doubt, contact the manufacturer (for address, see Clause 8)
1 Specified use
The purpose of the component-tested pressure relief valve
Type KSV
and
HD-KSV
, installed in a pip-
ing system carrying gaseous media, is to prevent a build-up of pressure in the upstream pipe sec-
tion by discharging medium into the atmosphere if the preset pressure is exceeded.
The purpose of the component-tested overflow valve
type ÜSV
and
HD-ÜSV
installed in a piping sys-
tem carrying gaseous media is to prevent an exceeding of the adjusted pressure in the upstream pipe
section by opening and thus letting the medium overflow into the downstream pipe section.
The response level for both safety valve types is adjusted by the manufacturer. The DEKRA monitors
and certifies the adjustment of every safety valve.
The safety valves must be installed in closed refrigerant circuits and at points and in positions where
they will operate if the preset pressure (gaseous phase of the refrigerant) is exceeded.
Permitted operating parameters for
Type KSV
and
HD-KSV
:
➢
For commercially available refrigerants except NH
3
,
➢
Operating temperatures from –30°C to +120°C,
➢
Set pressure as per identification between 1.5 and 45 bar.
Permitted operating parameters for
Type ÜSV
and
HD-ÜSV
:
➢
For commercially available refrigerants except NH
3
,
➢
Operating temperatures from –30°C to +120°C,
➢
Set pressure as per identification between 10 and 45 bar.
If Group 1 fluids as per 2014/68/EU are used, the manufacturer should be consulted for information
on the resistance of the safety valve to certain media.
It is a condition of specified use that Clause 2 <Safety instructions> is observed.
Neither a pressure relief valve type KSV, HD-KSV nor an overflow safety valve type ÜSV ,
HD-ÜSV may be used under operating conditions outside the above operating parameters.
Ambient temperatures must not exceed the limits specified above.
Failure to observe this warning note may result in damage to the safety valve and,
in turn, put the user at risk.
Protection against incorrect use of the pressure relief/overflow safety valve:
In particular, it must be assured that the refrigerant used is suitable for the parts of the
safety valve which come into contact with it. The manufacturer accepts no liability for
damage to the pressure relief or overflow safety valve caused by the use of prohibited
refrigerants, e.g. NH
3
.
Failure to observe this warning note may result in damage to the safety valve and,
in turn, put the user at risk.

Safety Valves Type KSV/ÜSV and HD-KSV/HD-ÜSV
2 Safety instructions
2.1 General safety instructions
In the first instance, the same safety regulations apply to pressure relief and overflow safety valves
as to the piping system in which they are installed. This document lays down only those safety instruc-
tions which must be observed
additionally
for pressure relief and overflow safety valves.
2.2 Safety instructions for the operator
Operation of pressure relief and overflow safety valves is not the manufacturer‘s responsibility; there-
fore, their use must comply with the following instructions:
The pressure relief/overflow safety valve must be used in accordance with the specified use
as per Clause 1.
Only pressure relief/overflow safety valves may be used with settings that are appropriate
to the operating conditions.
The temperature limits, including the ambient temperature in the vicinity of the safety valve,
given in Clause 1 <Specified use> must not be exceeded, and no corrosive media may be
present in the area which could damage the materials of external components or surfaces
of the pressure relief/overflow safety valve.
The piping system must have been installed properly and must be inspected at regular
intervals (inspection intervals to comply with those specified in the regulations for piping
systems, as a minimum!).
Pipe routing and support must be selected in such a way that no impermissible vibrations
occur. Under no circumstances may the pressure relief/overflow safety valve be used as a
pipe support in a vibrating piping system.
The special instructions for cleanliness during the installation work must be observed;
As far as possible, vertical installation of the safety valve should be ensured. If it is installed at
an angle (up to horizontal), it must be ensured that the hole in the housing faces downwards
to prevent condensate from collecting.
The safety valve discharge opening must not be reduced or closed. It must be positioned
in such a way that dirt and weather conditions cannot affect it.
The discharge pipe of a pressure relief valve must be laid so that the medium cannot cause
personal injury or property damage when the safety valve operates.
The discharge pipe of an overflow safety valve must be laid so that the medium is retained
within a closed circuit or is discharged into a separate pressure vessel of sufficient size to
accommodate an adequate volume of medium when the safety valve operates. At the end
of the outlet pipe, a check valve is to be integrated.
Installation and supervision of a pressure relief/overflow safety valve must always be carried
out by qualified personnel.
The operating pressure setting is DEKRA monitored.
It must be assured that:
1. only pressure relief or overflow safety valves are used with settings that are appro-
priate to the operating conditions;
2. this setting is not changed and the DEKRA‘s lead seal in the cap of the valve top
is not damaged.
