Number Line Clock
5
Intervals of Time
Unfold the hour and minute chains with their number lines
facing up. Place the minute chain directly below the hour
chain. Point the red hour hand down at the 1 and the blue
minute hand up at the 5. Ask children to determine the time
(1:05). Then ask children, “If it takes ten minutes to drive to a
friend's house, at what time will you arrive?” (1:15) Continue this
exercise until children grasp the concept.
Next, fl ip over both chains so the clock face numbers are
showing. Insert the chains into the base of the clock and
snap on the two hands. Provide children with additional story
situations (e.g. breakfast, lunch, dinner, school) and have them
determine the start and end times. Continue until children
successfully identify the time intervals.
If it is 15 more minutes until gym class, what time will gym class start?
