Telling Time to the Hour
Have children unfold the hour chain with the number line side
facing up. Place the red hour hand under the number 4. Then,
move the hour hand halfway between the 4 and 5. Ask children,
“What number is the hand pointing to? When does the number
change to 5?” Remind children that the number does not
change until the hand is directly on or past the 5. Continue this
exercise until children grasp the concept.
Introduction
Help children transition from counting to telling time with this
hands-on clock! Children will physically transform number lines
into a clock, allowing them to see that a clock is just a circular
number line.
Why the Number Line Clock?
The circular format of a clock and its dual representation (one
hour can also mean fi ve minutes) are concepts that some
children fi nd diffi cult to grasp. By learning time from a number
line, children are presented with a way to understand that time
is a continuous unit of measurement. The Number Line Clock
from hand2mind
®
provides children with a tactile tool to explore
time and see for themselves how telling time on a clock is just
like using a number line. The following activities should be done
in sequence.
