The total hardness of the water is the sum of the concentrations of
calcium ions and magnesium ions.
Note:
Calcium ions and magnesium ions exist side by side in nature,
e.g. in the mineral dolomite.
Hardness ranges according to the German Act on Environmental Sus-
tainability of Detergents and Cleaning Agents (WMRG):

From hardness range medium onwards, it is advisable to soften the
water for usage. Additional measures may be necessary depending on
the original quality of the water and its intended use.
