4. While lifting up on one side of blade guard
and right spreader pawl, place straightedge
against blade and spreader, making sure
straightedge does not touch a blade tooth.
When properly aligned, spreader/riving
knife will be in "Alignment Zone," shown in
Figure 53, and will be parallel with blade.
Anti-Kickback Pawls
The anti-kickback pawls allow the workpiece
to travel in only one direction. If the workpiece
moves backwards, such as during a kickback, the
pawls will dig into the workpiece to slow or stop it.
To work properly, the pawls must return to their
resting position after pivoting, as shown in
Figure 55, and they must NOT be engaged in the
arresting hooks.
If the pawls fail to return to the resting position, the
pivot area may need to be cleaned or the spring
may have been dislodged or broken and will need
to be fixed/replaced.
