PUK
Personal Unblocking Key – used to unlock a blocked SIM card. Most
operators will give you a PUK when you subscribe.
Roaming
Within your home network, this means that your mobile phone auto-
matically sets up communication procedures with different radio base
stations when on the move.
Scroll
The word “scroll” in this manual means pressing the left or right
arrow key to move between the menus or functions.
Select
The word “select” in this manual means scrolling to a menu or func-
tion, then pressing the
Y E S
key.
Semi-Duplex
In handsfree equipment, full duplex means that the connection is
open for both parties to talk simultaneously. Semi-duplex gives close
to, but not complete, duplex functionality.
Service Provider
A company that provides services and subscriptions to mobile phone
users.
Short Message Service
(or SMS) allows messages of up to 160 characters to be sent and
received via the network operator's message centre to your mobile
phone. Messages are stored if the phone is off or out of reach ensur-
ing that they reach you. To use this service, it must be supported by
your network.
SIM card
Subscriber Identity Module card – a card that must be inserted in any
GSM-based mobile phone. It contains subscriber details, security
information and memory for a personal directory of numbers. The
card can be a small plug-in type or credit card sized but both types
have the same functionality.
