Donning

Holding the full face mask ready

Undo the straps as far as possible.

Pass the neckband around your neck and button it into the front strap.

Fitting the Mask

Inspect the facepiece to ensure that the
harness straps are securely attached, the
nose cup is correctly located and secure,
the exhalation valve cover is secure and all
remaining component parts are in good
condition.

If fitted, slide and locate the spectacle frame
to the preferred position.

Unbutton the neckband.

Fully extend (open) the straps

of the head

harness

(Fig. 2)

.

Spread the harness, place the chin into the
facepiece

(Fig. 3)

, center the harness over

the head, ensuring that the harness is lying
flat and not twisted.

Ensure there is no hair or harness straps
interfering with the faceseal and that the
entire faceseal is touching and following the
contours of the face.

Tighten both neck straps

(Fig. 4, step 1)

then the temple straps

(Fig. 4, step 2)

evenly towards the back of the head
ensuring that the center of the harness
remains positioned in the middle of the
head

(Fig. 5)

.

Tighten the front strap

(Fig. 4, step 3)

only

if necessary. Breathe normally.
Expired air should easily flow out of the
exhalation valve.

After the CDR 4500 has been donned,
each person must inspect other personnel
(buddy check) who are wearing the
CDR 4500 to ensure that it has been
properly donned in accordance with these
instructions for use. In addition, the “buddy
check” is also to look for Facepiece
Donning Errors identified in these
instructions for use. The "buddy check"
must also look for:
— Head hair, side burns, piercings, and

anything else that may be in the sealing area of the mask

— Twisted straps
— Any other indications that the CDR 4500 is not being properly worn

Once the "buddy check" has been performed, carry out a negative or
positive fit check as noted below.

Negative and/or Positive Fit Check

Negative Fit Check

Seal the connector with the palm of your hand and inhale until negative
pressure (suction) is generated. Alternatively you may install the mask
plug (p/n 40 52 539).

Hold your breath for a moment.
The negative pressure should be maintained.

If not, retighten the straps.

Repeat this fit check twice.

DANGER!
Head hair, facial hair, beard stubble, sideburns, piercings,
earrings and the wearing of spectacles will adversely
affect and interfere with the facepiece seal.
Correct fit of the facepiece is only ensured if the complete
facepiece seal makes close contact with the skin.

WARNING!
Before use the user must perform a quantitative
respirator fit test in accordance with OSHA Respiratory
Protection Standard 29 CFR 1910.134.
Failure to do so can result in serious personal injury or
death!

Positive Fit Check

Seal the exhalation valve cover with the palm of your hand and exhale
gently. The mask should inflate slightly.

If the mask does not maintain a slight positive pressure, readjust the
facepiece and headstraps until a sucessful fit check is met.

Facepiece Donning Errors

The following errors may occur:
— center strap too high or

center of the harness too high

— detectable separation from face or hair between seal (separation from face)

Exhalation Valve Check

Seal off the connector and exhale vigorously.
The exhaled air must be able to escape without obstruction. If not, see
“Visual Inspection of the Exhalation Valve”.

Extreme Operating Conditions

Low Temperatures

Treat the inside of the lens with anti-fog agent (i.e. Dräger’s "klar pilot") to
prevent it from fogging up. Hardening of the exhalation valve disc is
possible. Take particular care to check for leaks.

High Temperatures

If the lens is seriously damaged or deformed, leave the danger area
immediately.

Operation with Respiratory Filters

Preconditions

The ambient air must contain at least 19.5 % oxygen by volume. Do not use this
respiratory system in unventilated containers, trenches, ducts etc. The type of
pollutants must be known and the appropriate respiratory filter selected.

Screwing in the Canister

Take the canister out of the packaging or storage container.

Entirely remove the protective plugs and sealing strips from the canister.

Firmly screw the canister into the facepiece connector.

Seal the canister with the palm of your hand and inhale until negative
pressure is generated (negative fit check).

Hold your breath for a moment.
The negative pressure should be maintained.

If not, retighten the straps.

Repeat this fit check twice. Another positive fit check is not required any
more.

CAUTION!
Never use a mask that leaks!
In case of a leak, the negative pressure, which holds
the mask in its position on the face, will decrease.
If a leak is detected, the mask must be readjusted or
removed and refitted and the entire fit check must be
repeated. If the mask still leaks after a second try, the
wearer should not don the mask and enter a CBRN
atmosphere.

WARNING!
If it is not possible for the wearer to achieve a
satisfactory faceseal, the wearer is not permitted to
wear and/or use CBRN approved masks for CBRN
applications. Refer to “Facepiece Donning Errors” for
details in order to ensure a proper fit (Fig. 6-9).
