5.3 STARTING
Once having completed the operations described in chapters 4.4 PRELIMINARY STEPS and 4.5
ADJUSTMENTS, the machine is ready to be used.
NEVER leave the machine on without supervision.
Once the machine has been started, the wedge moves to the fully open position.
►
Place the log to be split in position.
►
Hold the two levers (2 Fig. 11) securely with both hands.
►
Push the two levers (2 Fig. 11) inwards at the same time, thus tightening the log as if in a vice and
holding it securely in position.
►
Lower the two levers (2 Fig. 11) at the same time; the wedge will start moving down, splitting the
log in two (with the cross-shaped wedge, the log will be split into four pieces).
►
As soon as the wedge starts cutting the log, slowly and gradually move the two levers apart (2 Fig.
11); this will prevent the wedge from moving back up with the log stuck onto it and prevent the log
from interfering with the levers.
The log-splitter can only be operated with both hands on the levers, which repre-
sents a simple yet effective safeguard against crushing the hands. In fact, if just one
hand is removed from a lever, the wedge stops in the current position; if both hands
are removed from the levers, the wedge returns to the fully open position.
It is absolutely prohibited to use other parts of the body (feet, knees, etc.) to press
the two control levers downwards.
►
When the log has been split, release the levers; the wedge will return to the fully open position,
ready for a new cycle.
If the log is not split, do not continue to force the wedge, otherwise the hydraulic oil
will overheat and the hydraulic pump may be damaged. In these cases, remove the
log, turn it around and repeat the operation.
Logs of wood have a variety of irregular shapes. Before starting the splitting ope-
rations, the logs should be stacked in the best way for correct operation. If the log
tends to slip during the working cycle, immediately release the control levers, wait
for the wedge to lift back up and then place the log in a better position. During the
splitting operations, the wedge may get stuck in the knots in the wood. Switch the
machine off and remove the log from the wedge, and then reposition it so as to avoid
the knots.
5.4 STOPPING
5.4.1 NORMAL AND EMERGENCY STOPPING
The voluntary and emergency stop procedures are described in paragraph 3.7 STOP FUNCTIONS.
