8.0 Why Nexus?
As more functions have been added to prosthetic hands, the more complicated using them has become. An
apparent problem arose which was the time it was taking users to access all these new functions with the two
main grip switch triggers available.
Therefore, we designed our thumb to give users a quick, intuitive, and novel way to change grips via our smart
switching option. It works by tapping the side of the thumb which activates the powered rotation and will swing
the thumb between opposed and non-opposed positions and can be assigned to whichever action the user
would like. We have seen this be incredibly valuable to bilateral users who can simply tap the thumb on the
side of their leg, or a hard surface and it will give them fast access to all the grips.
8.4 Water and Dust Resistant (IP44)
The Nexus Hand has an integrated medical grade silicone glove with a soft touch coating. This provides the
hand with IP44 rated dust and water resistance, giving users that extra protection whilst going about their daily
life. We made sure the glove is as durable as possible with thicker integrated fingertips to reduce wear and
tear and customisable polycarbonate covers to provide another layer of protection.
These covers are painted on the inside for increased durability and make the hand much easier to clean. We
believe the combination of the glove and covers gives a look that stands out from the crowd, and the best
part; both are easily replaceable in clinic and inexpensive to do so.
