Software Overview
The functionality of the CN 3960 is controlled by the Service Aware Operating System
(SAOS) software. The SDS family of products use a shared software interface which is
described in the System Software Configuration Guide. This section is intended solely as
an introduction to the software features present on the CN 3960. Please refer to the
software document for full descriptions and configuration information.

SNMP
SDS switches use public and private Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) MIBs
for switch management.
Public and private MIBs used with the Ciena switches include:
•
SNMP (RFC 1157)
•
MIB-II (RFC 1213)
•
Bridge MIB (RFC 1493)
•
Ethernet MIB (RFC 1643)
•
4-group RMON (RFC 1757)
•
IP Forwarding Table MIBs (RFC 2096)
•
Multicast Routing MIBs
Device Manager
The SDS switches are managed directly using the Ciena Ethernet Services Manager (ESM).
The SDS can also be managed using any SNMP manager. Services can be provisioned in real
time without requiring software reloads or network outages. Alarms are also managed
using ESM. Refer to the Ethernet Services Manager manuals for more information. The SDS
switches can also be managed out-of-band via the local management port.
DHCP/TFTP-Auto Configuration and Recovery
After system initialization, using Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP), the Ciena
switches can discover startup and configuration information, such as its IP address,
gateway, and command file name for downloading the application file via TFTP. This
allows each device to be configured automatically without user intervention. This
dynamic configuration can also help in recovering the device after a reboot or if a
problem is detected.
