Chapter 8
Expansion - Ethernet
This chapter deals with the addition of capabilities or user connections to existing network
configurations using the MMAC family of modular hubs.
Simple Ethernet
Simple Ethernet networks are those which consist of a single Ethernet segment.
The simple Ethernet configuration does not incorporate any bridging, routing or
switching capabilities. Ethernet repeaters are used to propagate the signals of all
stations on the network to all other stations on the network.
The simple Ethernet example configuration of Chapter 5, Ethernet, utilized an
MMAC-M8FNB chassis containing an IRM3 Ethernet repeater and management
module and three TPMIM-24 connectivity modules. This combination of modules
and chassis provides Ethernet repeating and SNMP management for up to 72
Ethernet stations using Unshielded Twisted Pair cabling.
Adding Stations
If we plan to add more Ethernet stations to this existing simple Ethernet
configuration, all we need to do is follow the last step that was followed when
designing the network; determine how many stations are to be connected and
what media and connector type the stations use, divide the number of stations by
the number of available ports offered by a MIM which meets the media and port
constraints, and configure the resulting number of MIMs (rounding up any
fractions) in the empty slots in the chassis. For example:
Using the configuration discussed in Chapter 5, we need to add 20 more stations
which utilize the same media and connector type as the existing stations. Since we
will be utilizing UTP cabling, we narrow the choice of modules down to the
TPMIM-22, TPMIM-24, TPMIM-32, and TPMIM-34. Since the installation uses
RJ45 connectors, we discard the two MIMs which provide RJ21 Telco ports. This
leaves us with a choice between the TPMIM-22 and the TPMIM-24.
