Token Ring
Cabletron Systems has also introduced a series of TRMIMs which connect to the
four available Token Ring backplane channels of the MMAC chassis. Where the
standard TRMIMs can only attach to Token Ring 1 of the backplane, The Token
Ring Port Assignment Modules, called TRXMIMs, allow any port to be assigned,
through management, to any of the four backplane rings of the chassis. These
specialized modules require specific management modules (detailed later in this
chapter) to use the multiple backplane channels.
Cabletron Systems also provides media interface modules which supply
Ring-In/Ring-Out (RI/RO) ports for the creation of trunk connections. These
trunk connections are used to extend the Token Ring to other locations without
closing the ring off and using a bridge or router.
In order to make trunk connections, a module which provides RI/RO ports is
required. Cabletron Systems produces modules called Token Ring-In/Ring-Out
Media Interface Modules, or TRRMIMs, which supply these ports. All TRRMIMs
provide, at least, one Ring In port and one Ring Out port. To make the best use of
available chassis space, TRRMIMs are also available which supply twelve station
ports in addition to these RI/RO ports.
Cabletron Systems also produces RI/RO capable modules which allow the RI/RO
ports to be assigned to any of the four backplane Token Ring channels of the
MMAC chassis. These modules are called TDRMIMs, and each provides two sets
(pairs) of front panel RI/RO connections, each of which may be individually
assigned through management functions to any of the four MMAC Token Ring
channels. The TDRMIM modules require a TRMM-4 which performs the
management functions for the four Token Ring backplane channels.
