4 General information concerning possible malfunctions
of any type of wood fireplace and their remedies
A whole lot of soot gets left on the viewing window
Slight soot covering on the glass pane is inevitable and in -
creases a little with each firing. Excess soot on the glass
has mainly three different causes:
The wood is too damp. This leads to unclean combustion with
high smoke formation.
The ember bed has a much too low temperature, which results
in excessive amount of smoke during reloading and a poor
draught in the flue pipe.
Incorrect handling, such as: The combustion air supply is incor-
rectly set.
Check the moisture content of the wood, ensure that you have a
good bed of embers and possible read through the ignition
instructions (see item 2) once again.
Temporary smoke odour in the vicinity of the stove:
This can occur due to weather-related pressure in the chimney
and usually happens in a specific wind direction. Should this
occur too frequently, consult your chimney builder about the
possibility to remedy this effect.
Handling: Please also pay attention, never to open the
stove
door in a jerking manner!
The thereby resulting under
pressure can draw smoke into the installation room. First, open
the door lock carefully and wait until the fire has adjusted to the
new air supply situation (2–3 seconds). You can now slowly
open the door.
Discoloration of painted parts
The discoloration of painted parts is due to a exceedingly high
temperature in the wood stove. The reason for the excessive
temperature can be due to a permanent exceeding of the max -
imum permitted amount of wood, or the use of unsuitable fuel
(e.g. pallet scraps, large amounts of thin waste wood, etc.), or
else a much too high chimney draught.
The warranty does not cover self inflicted damages of this nature.
Chimney fire
Causes:
A chimney fire can occur due to the use of wrong fuel
quality – e.g. with excessive wood moisture – or the improper
operation of the wood stove. Excess tar and water vapour, so-
called lubricant soot is hereby deposited on the walls of the
chimney. And if the saturation point of the condensate is
reached, this can lead to ignition of the chimney with consid -
erable flame and temperature development.
This is how this can effectively be prevented:
1. Use dry, well matured firewood.
2. Provide for sufficient oxygen during the combustion process.
3. Arrange for the chimney to be serviced and cleaned regularly.
4. Ensure that the chimney has the correct dimensions.
5. Do not add too much firewood, in order to prevent
a smouldering fire.
6. Always pay attention to the operating instructions of the
wood stove.
What has to be done in the case of an emergency?
–
Notify the fire department – Emergency call.
–
Tightly seal off the doors and combustion air supply
to the fireplace.
–
Move away all flammable objects near the fireplace.
–
Keep clear/vacate all accesses to the chimney cleaning
closures.
–
Notify the master chimney sweep.
–
Keep a fire extinguisher ready at hand.
Important!
You should never attempt to extinguish the
chimney fire with water!
The evaporating water can lead to a “blasting effect” and
the chimney can be seriously damaged.
General malfunction
In case problems arise that you can not fix yourself, let the fire
burn out and the woodstove cool down.
Before recommissioning consult your authorized dealer or
master chimney sweep, or directly contact the Bullerjan GmbH.
