Introduction
An access control system is a set of hardware and software components dedicated to the detection, identification and monitoring of recognition devices.
Each one of these devices is exclusively associated with one person who is the holder. Moreover, since the detecting process takes place over an area
which is characterised by a finite number of access points, the physical position of the hardware components (readers, receivers) physically delimits an
installation.
Therefore access points are controlled by detecting the transits of persons through the access points in the installation area.
In relation to an access control installation, it can be stated that:
Securbase Light/Plus is the software and graphical interface of the access control system. If installed on a PC, it makes it possible to display each in-
stallation configuration aspect, as well as to monitor access control real-time operation and access all the information about the events detected by the
hardware system and the logical items (groups, calendars, time bands and access points) managed by the installation. The software described in this
guide represents the user’s interface for handling all installation information. On the other hand, the installation is managed and controlled by Compass
SC, the hardware core of the entire system.
As well as Securbase Light/Plus and Compass SC, an installation also includes a number of devices (readers and receivers) which are able to detect and
control the transit of persons through the access points which delimit the installation. These devices are connected in the RS 485 network to the Compass
SC stand-alone unit, which manages them in terms of both configuration and normal operation.
The present user’s manual offers an exhaustive description of all the installation and configuration processes related to the creation of an access control
installation based on Compass SC and Securbase Light/Plus.
Therefore, it deals with all the main aspects concerning the installation, configuration and operation of both the Securbase Light/Plus software and the
hardware devices which can be connected to the Compass SC unit and are essential features of the installation.
Hardware components and software versions
The hardware components of an access control system based on the Compass SC unit depend on the installation characteristics, the number of access points
to be controlled and the type of identification devices to be managed. Other important characteristics are the type of serial port (RS 232 or USB) to be used
for connection to the PC, and the presence of a parallel port or an additional USB port for housing the Securbase Light/Plus hardware activation key.
These are the hardware components which contribute to making up an installation:
Compass SC (RS 232)
Compass SC (USB)
The Compass SC unit is available in the RS 232 or USB version.
Both units are functionally identical, but they differ in their different
serial communication interface with the PC.
It is important to choose the Compass SC version on the basis of
the PC communication ports which are to be used to configure and
monitor the installation.
Compass 485
The transit of persons through access points is controlled by means
of a Compass 485 unit, to which one or two Compass Reader uni-
ts are connected. In the internal memory of each Compass 485,
thousands of identification codes can be stored locally. This makes it
possible to ensure transit enabling and activation even without any
communication with Compass SC.
Compass Reader
One or two Compass Reader units can be connected to each Com-
pass 485 to control the access points by means of the proximity
detection technology.
These devices are able to detect the presence of Compass Isocard
cards, as well as Compass Ring key-holders.
RTD-CA
This receiver unit manages a large number of Mitto 2 or 4 tran-
smitters, as if they were identification devices for the transit of one
person through an access point. Therefore one or more MITTO tran-
smitters can be associated with a person.
The RTD-CA unit can be incorporated within an access control in-
stallation as an ordinary access point reader (controller). By pres-
sing a key on the transmitter, the user simulates a transit through the
installation and determines the consequent opening or closing of the
relevant access point.
A Compass Reader unit can also be connected.
