THE LUGGAGE CARRIER
As the name indicates, the luggage
carrier is intended for luggage and
not passengers. The maximum load of
a (back) luggage carrier on a childs’
bicycle is 10 kg. Make sure that a sad-
dlebag resting on the luggage carrier
cannot get in the rear wheel and that
your heels cannot touch the bag during
cycling.
THE STAND
The Batavus Safety Stand is sturdy and
stable, so that the bicycle is not as likely
to fall over if it is windy.

SERVICES AND YOUR DEALER
Even if you look after it really well, that
cool bicycle deserves a serious service
once a year. Your dealer not only has
the tools and the experience to adjust
and grease hidden rotating compo-
nents such as the headset, freewheel
and hubs, but his expertise also enables
him to discover small things which are
not right in good time (30). This is vital
for your safety, but also to enable you
to keep cycling ‘like a rocket’.
Good, professional maintenance is also
extremely important as regards the
guarantee, because it can lapse if your
bicycle is not maintained in accord-
ance with the guidelines stipulated in
this booklet or is not maintained by
a competent professional. For profes-
sional maintenance it is often necessary
to see your Batavus dealer, certainly in
case of any doubt. Read the guarantee
conditions later in this booklet carefully
with your parents.
MAINTENANCE OF THE CHAIN
A good service goes like this:
1. Spread a few newspapers out on
the ground and put your bicycle upside
down on them. Clean the links thor-
oughly with an old toothbrush, turning
the chain round with your hand on the
pedal.
2. The clean chain is now ready for
some oil or grease (your Batavus dealer
has the right sort for your bicycle
in stock). Do not put too much on,
though, because dirt sticks to excessive
oil and grease. Wipe superfl uous oil or
grease off with a cloth.
3. At the same time check whether the
chain is not too loose. You can easily
see if this is the case by moving the
chain up and down in the middle of its
path. If you can move it up and down
more than 2 cm, your Batavus dealer
can easily solve the problem for you
(31).
Perhaps your bicycle has a closed chain
guard to provide even better protec-
tion from dirt. It may, however, be
necessary to have a look behind the
chain guard if you hear a lot of squeak-
ing and creaking. After a time, water
(particularly if it is salty) will eventually
fi nd its way in to the chain. It is advis-
able to go and see your Batavus dealer
for maintenance.
