dlebars can also be adjusted. Loosen
the clamping bolt slightly more than
one turn (5). Turn the handlebars and
tighten the bolt fi rmly again.
• The steering pin must be tightened
fi rmly before the bicycle can be used.
• Check that there is no play in the
steering pin regularly. You can also con-
sult your Batavus dealer about this.
• At least 7 cm of both the saddle and
steering pins must be inserted into the
frame tube! This point is usually indica-
ted with small lines as a warning.
• When applying corrections with the
steering pin, make sure that, when you
tighten things up again, the handlebars
are straight in relation to the wheel.
• Luggage, such as shopping or a
school bag, belong on the luggage car-
rier at the back. It is important that you
do not hang anything on the handle-
bars so you can steer safely!
• Batavus advises against mounting
aerobars (tri-bars) etc. on your handle-
bars.
THE GRIPS
In order to be able to steer safely it
is important that the grips are fi rmly
fi xed. If they are loose, there is a danger
that you will lose control of the handle-
bars! Regular checks prevent trouble.
Torn grips can also cause accidents dur-
ing cycling so it is best to replace them
as soon as possible. Your Batavus dealer
always knows what to do.
Most Boys’ & Girls’ bicycles are fi tted
with Batavus grips with a ‘Safety stop’.
This is a raised anti-slip knob which pre-
vents your hands from slipping off the
handlebars. It is a clever, safe solution.
The fully-adjustable Ergo-Grip (6) will
give you even more comfort. This grip
is one of Batavus’s own developments;
it gives the palm of the hand just the
right support. Because of this, tingling
fi ngers and numb hands are limited to
a minimum. The grip is equipped with
a bolt which has to fall precisely into a
groove in the handlebars. If you want
to adjust the Ergo-Grip, loosen the bolt
a few turns, place the grip in the cor-
rect position and then tighten the bolt
again. Check whether your grip is tight
enough!

HUB GEARS
Some Boys’ & Girls’ bicycles are
equipped with three gears in the rear
hub. The purpose of these gears is to
enable you to cycle comfortably and
without too much of an effort under
all conditions (wind, hills). It is wise to
use the lighter gears as much as pos-
sible to prevent straining your knees
and legs.
Hub gears are almost maintenance
free. If, as time goes by, gears jump
spontaneously or you hear any creak-
ing, it is a good idea to go and see your
Batavus dealer. He can easily correct
the problem. If you can, and want, to
do it yourself (possibly with the help of
your parents) here is how you do it:
