INSPECTING BURNERS
Check pilot fl ame pattern and burner fl ame pat-
terns often.
PILOT FLAME PATTERN
Figure 46
shows a correct pilot fl ame pattern.
Figure 47
shows an incorrect pilot fl ame pattern.
The incorrect pilot fl ame is not properly heating the
thermocouple. When the thermocouple cools, the
heater will shut down.
If pilot fl ame pattern is incorrect, as shown in
Figure 47
• turn heater off
(see To Turn Off Gas to Appliance,
Page 23
)
• see
Troubleshooting
,

NOTE
: The pilot fl ame on natural gas units will have
a slight curve, but fl ame should be blue and have
no yellow or orange color.

MAIN BURNER
Periodically inspect all burner fl ame holes with
the heater running. All slotted burner fl ame holes
should be open with yellow flame present. All
round burner fl ame holes should be open with
a small blue fl ame present. Some burner fl ame
holes may become blocked by debris or rust, with
no fl ame present. If so, turn off heater and let cool.
Remove blockage. Blocked burner fl ame holes may
create soot.
BURNER FLAME PATTERN
Figure 48
shows the correct burner fl ame.
The front ember burner should have a small blue
fl ame. When the ember material is applied, the
embers will glow red and the fl ame may have a few
small bright yellow tips less than 1/2 inch in height.
The middle burner produces a blue fl ame that im-
pinges upon the ceramic ramp causing the ramp to
glow red with an occasional yellow streak.
The rear burner produces a bright yellow fl ame with
the base of the fl ame being blue.
Figure 49
shows the incorrect burner fl ame.
The front ember burner should not produce yellow
fl ames greater than 1/2" in height or any dark yellow
or orange fl ames.
The middle burner should not produce fl ame that
remains yellow or yellow fl ame that extends above
the ceramic ramp.
The rear burner should not produce a dark yellow /
orange fl ame nor should it be absent of blue color
near the base of the fl ame next to the shiny stain-
less steel burner..
If burner fl ame pattern is incorrect, as shown in
Figure 49
.
• turn fi replace off
(see To Turn Off Gas to Appli-
ance,

)

WARNING: If incorrect burner
fl ame pattern occurs your fi replace
could produce increased levels of
carbon monoxide.
NOTICE: Do not mistake orange fl ames
with yellow tipping. Dirt or other fi ne
particles are burned by fi replace,
causing brief patches of orange fl ame.
