NOTE: Sealant is only required on the crankcase
seam.
21. Position the O-ring into the water pump cover;
then install the cover. Secure with six screws.
Tighten in a crisscross pattern to 96 in.-lb.
NOTE: Lubricating the O-ring with a light coat of
grease will help keep the O-ring in place.

22. With the thermostat properly seated in the crank-
case, install the thermostat cap. Tighten the exist-
ing hardware to 96 in.-lb.
NOTE: The thermostat must be installed with the
bleed hole in the 12 o’clock position.

23. Install the coolant temperature sensor (coated with
white Loctite #575) and tighten to 18 ft-lb; then
secure the sensor wire to the sensor with a cable
tie.
24. With new gaskets in place, install the reed valve
assemblies and intake flanges; then in a crisscross
pattern, tighten to 96 in.-lb.

NOTE: Carefully inspect the reeds for chips,
cracks, or wear. If replacement of reeds is neces-
sary, see Reed Valves sub-section in this manual.
25. Place the cylinder base gasket into position on the
crankcase; then install the four cylinder locating
pins.
26. Install the piston ring on each piston so the letter
on the top (inclined surface) of the ring faces the
dome of the piston.
