8-3 Overview of the Level Setup

Goal of the Level Setup

The goal of the level setup is to assign values to the level resources (for

example drive levels, compare levels, load currents, power supply

voltage).

The easiest way to achieve this goal would be to assign fixed values to

the level resources. However, this approach does not satisfy the

requirements of many applications. For this reason, SmarTest provides

the more powerful equation-based approach to the level setup. Using

the equation-based level setup

Expressions

• You can use expressions and variables to specify the value of a level

resource. For example, you could set for the high drive level (vih)

vih = Vcc - 0.5

vih is the level resource. Vcc is an equation variable or a spec vari-

able.

Equation variables

• If you use equation variables you have to set up an equation system

(in the equation editor) which determines the values of the equation

variables.

Spec variables

• If you use spec variables (specs) you have to assign values to these

variables in the Spec Tool.

Benefits of Using Level Specs

If you use spec variables the values of the level resources depend on the

spec variables.

The benefits of using specs are the following:

• Spec variables can easily be swept from the Spec Tool to determine

the transition point between spec values where the test passes and

spec values where the test fails.

• Spec variables can be accessed (read and set) from the testflow and

from user procedures.

• Spec variables can be accessed from testfunctions and from the

Shmoo Tool.

The properties listed above do not apply to equation variables. Equa-

tion variables are a means to setup expressions defining the level

resource values.
