OPERATION
TILLAGE OBJECTIVES
The correct preparation of the seedbed can be one
of the most vital steps in the growing cycle. Properly
firming and sealing the soil before and after planting
can result in increased yields.
The primary objective of this type of tillage tool is the
reduction of soil particles to a size that:
1. Establishes enough compaction around the new
seed to encourage the movement of moisture
into it.
2. Soil porosity is retained permitting the
withdrawal of excess water and supplying
sufficient air movement through the soil.
3. Leave a rough enough surface that will dry
rapidly and discourage weed seed germination.
Secondary objectives include:
1. Creating a level and uniform surface for
subsequent operations.
2. Destruction of small weeds which have spouted
since previous tillage.
It should be noted that this machine is adaptable to
many conditions and applications, but it cannot be
expected to cure problems caused by soil that was
worked when it was too wet or other unfavorable
conditions.
The UM43 Ultramulcher is utilized to achieve the
following:
•
To mix the soil.
•
To eliminate air pockets.
•
To destroy small weeds.
•
To level the seedbed.
•
To raise moisture to the upper soil level for
consistent seed germination.
•
To roll a small soil particle bed for maximum
seed germination.
•
To retain moisture at the seed level by placing a
firm particle blanket at the upper level.
•
To reduce evaporation by controlling the
surface area of the soil which is exposed.
•
To assist wind erosion control with a firmed
surface.
•
To assist water erosion control by placing
endless small grooves and miniature pockets in
the surface which prevent run-off and aid in
even water penetration into the soil.
These objectives are often accomplished by running
the spring tines at less than full rotational depth. Full
depth is usually not necessary. An added benefit of
less fuel consumption is realized when the tines are
run shallow.
A cylinder stop or stroke control cylinder is
recommended to maintain a consistent working
depth.
