2.3.4 Principles of radiation protection
The following principles of radiation protection are used in the System:
1)
System has an indicator (a red lamp) indicating that the scanning is in progress.
2)
Power supply to the System is controlled by a key switch. When the scanning is initi-
ated, the key is captured. Turning of the key switch never results in the generating the
X-rays.
3)
Interlocking device or control console is not used to activate the X-ray. The X-ray is
initialized directly by the operator.
4)
System has emergency stop buttons for the operator to terminate the scanning in case
of emergency.
5)
Operator’s AWS is arranged so as the operator has a clear view of the scanning area.
6)
Short-circuit to the ground does not generate X-ray and the scanning process is not
started.
7)
Failure of any component of the System does not cause failure of more than one
safety interlock.
8)
X-ray generator is enclosed with the X-ray protective housing.
9)
System has no removable panels that when opened allows intrusion into the radiation
field.
10)
Interlocking devices terminate the primary beam output in the event of any System
faults that could result in abnormal or unintended radiation emission.
11)
In the event of a malfunction, the System terminates radiation exposure rapidly so that
an individual does not obtain an ambient dose equivalent exceeding 250
μ
Sv regard-
less of the size of the exposed area.
12)
There is an indicator on the Operator's AWS that lights up when the X-ray is turned
on and indicates the high voltage in the X-ray tube, not only during the scan.
13)
The technical parameters of each operating mode are set by the manufacturer in ad-
vance and cannot be changed by the operator. Besides, the operator can clearly see
the indicator showing the operating mode being used.
14)
X-ray generator is disabled upon scanning completion.
15)
The System may be equipped with a dosimeter intended for radiation dose level mon-
itoring at all modes of X-ray generator operation.
16)
The System can be equipped with an X-ray protective shutter that blocks the X-ray
radiation.
17)
Due to built-in filters the X-ray beam is attenuated and becomes spectrally homoge-
neous, reducing thus the effect of scattered radiation and significantly reducing the
radiation dose for both the inspected person and the operating personnel.
