(SNMP)
Although there are several ways to access, configure, and monitor a
Switch 4007 system, one of the most common ways is to use an external
software application (that resides on a PC or workstation) that
communicates with the system using the Simple Network Management
Protocol (SNMP). A piece of software called an
SNMP agent
resides on
each module in the Switch 4007 in order to respond to requests for
information from the SNMP management station. Once these requests
reach the system, these requests are handled by proxy from the
Management Module to other modules. The Management Module is the
single point of contact from the Switch 4007 to the SNMP management
station.
The SNMP agent provides access to the collection of information about
the system, called Management Information Bases (MIBs). (Your views of
MIB information differ depending on the SNMP management method
that you choose.) In addition, you can configure an SNMP agent to report
significant events in messages called
traps
to an SNMP management
station.
You must configure some SNMP settings on the Management Module
and some on individual switching modules. This chapter outlines the
latter.
For information about SNMP settings on the Management Module,
including the IP address for the system, community strings (passwords),
trap forwarding addresses, and SNMP extensions, see the
Switch 4007
Implementation Guide
.
The Switch 4007 software and management interfaces are built from
CoreBuilder
®
9000 switch technology. In Switch 4007 software
releases 3.0.0 and 3.0.5, the prompts and displays in all interfaces may
indicate this heritage.
