Overview
A Switch 4007 system begins with a chassis that has 2 slots for
management modules, 1 slot for a switch fabric module, and 6 slots for
LAN switching modules. Fans and power supplies are required for
operation of this chassis, as well as at least one management module and
one switch fabric module. Then, you can add the LAN switching modules
that fit your network needs and a second management module if you
want to have management redundancy.
Different switch fabric modules are available. Ensure that the capacity of
the switch fabric module is appropriate to the LAN switching modules
that you install.
You can build a Switch 4007 system from individual components or you
can purchase a starter kit (in which some components are pre-installed in
a chassis at the factory) and customize it with additional modules to fill
the remaining empty slots.
You can manage a Switch 4007 system through a terminal interface,
through a Web interface, or through applications that are based on the
Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP).
Management and
Data Channels
The system is designed with separate physical channels for network
traffic and management traffic:
■
The management LAN (MLAN) is a 10Mbps pathway that handles
management traffic between switching modules and the
management module. The management module acts as the single
point of contact for the system.
■
Multi-gigabit pathways connect the switch fabric module slot to all
other slots in the chassis for processing network traffic. These paths
are finite in hardware but the actual number of them that are used
depends on the capacity of the switch fabric module that is installed
(24 Gbps or 9 Gbps).
