TROUBLESHOOTING

STICK WELDING ISSUES

Adjust current.

Current may be set too low for electrode
size.

Adjust current.

Current may be set too high for electrode
size.

“blasts  off”  when
arc is struck.

Electrode  “stick”  in
weld puddle.

Porosity − small cav-
ities  or  holes  result-
ing  from  gas  pock-
ets in weld metal.

Reduce arc length.

Arc length too long.

Use dry electrode.

Damp electrode.

Remove all grease, oil, moisture, rust, paint, coatings, slag,
and dirt from work surface before welding.

Workpiece dirty.

Decrease amperage or select larger electrode.

Amperage too high for electrode.

Reduce arc length or voltage.

Arc length too long or voltage too high.

Excessive Spatter −
scattering  of  molten
metal  particles  that
cool  to  solid  form
near weld bead.

Incomplete  Fusion  −
failure  of  weld  metal
to  fuse  completely
with base metal or a

bead.

Increase  amperage.  Select  larger  electrode  and  increase
amperage.

Insufficient heat input.

Place stringer bead in proper location at joint during welding.

Improper welding technique.

Keep arc on leading edge of weld puddle.

Workpiece dirty.

changed  the  word  “work”  to  “electrode”  to  help  better
exapling angle when welding various positions.

Momentarily  hold  arc  on  groove  side  walls  when  using
weaving technique.

Remove all grease, oil, moisture, rust, paint, coatings, slag,
and dirt from work surface before welding.

Lack Of Penetration
− shallow fusion be-
tween  weld  metal
and base metal.

Improper joint preparation.

Material  too  thick.  Joint  preparation  and  design  must  pro-
vide access to bottom of groove.

Keep arc on leading edge of weld puddle.

Improper weld technique.

Insufficient heat input.

Increase  amperage.  Select  larger  electrode  and  increase
amperage.

Reduce travel speed.

B u r n   T h r o u g h −
weld  metal  melting
completely  through
base metal resulting
in  holes  where  no
metal remains.

Select lower amperage. Use smaller electrode.

Excessive heat input.

Increase or maintain steady travel speed.
