Chapter 1
MODULE DESCRIPTION
1.1 INTRODUCTION
The XVME-682 VMEbus PC/AT Processor Module is designed to combine the high-
performance and ruggedized packaging of the VMEbus with the broad application software
base of the IBM PC/AT standard. The module is fully AT-compatible, capable of running
standard PC/AT software.
The XVME-682 is comprised of two VMEbus-compatible, 6U (double-high) cards: the CPU
Module and the I/O Module. This unique two-card architecture is discussed later in this
chapter.
The XVME-682 comes in four versions depending on the memory desired and the mounting
locations of the boards relative to one another. The two memory and configuration options
can be selected in any combination. This provides for four versions.
The memory options available on the XVME-682 are either 1 or 4M RAM.
The location option gives the user the ability to mount the CPU and I/O boards together or
in non-adjacent VMEbus backplane slots. When together, the shared PC/AT signals are passed
between the boards via a xx-pin connector. In the non-adjacent version, the PC/AT signals
are routed via the VMEbus P2 backplane.
Table 1-1 below gives the configuration options, and their xycom designation.
