– Mark chain links that are opposite the markings on the cam‐
shaft adjusters. Installation is facilitated by marking the cam‐
shaft timing chain.
– Undo and remove camshaft adjuster bolts and remove cam‐
shaft adjuster.
Note
The camshaft timing chain is held on the sprocket of the oil pump
by the bottom timing chain cover. The timing chain cannot jump
over.
Installing camshaft adjuster
Condition:
• Crankshaft is at »TDC« position
• Chain drive sprocket for high-pressure pump is fixed in place
with adjusting tool - T10363-
• Camshafts have been fixed in place with camshaft bar -
T10068 A-
First install inlet camshaft adjuster as follows:

The camshaft adjusters are locked when »at rest«. This pre‐
vents the sender wheel from turning when adjusting the valve
timing. If the locking mechanism is not engaged (locked) when
»at rest«, turn the adjuster in both directions by hand until it is
locked. If this is not possible, renew camshaft adjuster.

Due to a fitted key, camshaft adjusters can only be bolted on
in one position -arrows- at camshaft mounting.
– Fit inlet camshaft adjuster with fitted timing chain on camshaft.
Observe the following when doing this:
• The timing chain to high-pressure pump drive sprocket must
not »sag«.
• It must be possible to easily position the camshaft adjuster with
»tight« timing chain and to tighten hand-tight.
• The arrow -1- on camshaft adjuster »24E« must align with right
notch -2- of timing housing. Markings on timing housing
⇒ page 64 .
– Tighten camshaft adjuster bolt hand-tight.
– From the tooth which aligns with the arrow -1- and the notch
-2-, now count exactly 16 rollers to the right on the camshaft
timing chain. Mark this roller with a coloured pen.
