Lion (VL-EPMe-42) Reference Manual

Serial Ports

The Lion features four on-board 16550-based serial communications channels Two are standard
PC I/O address (COM1,COM2) and two are via HSUARTs in the Kaby Lake processor (COM3,
COM4). COM1, COM2 are multiprotocol RS-232/422/485 ports. COM3, COM4 are RS-232.

Use the BIOS Setup utility to select between RS-232 and RS-422/485 operating modes.

Jumper block V1 configures the serial ports for RS-422/485 operation. See

for

details. The 120

Ω termination resistor should be enabled RS-485 endpoint stations; termination is

optional for RS-422. It should be disabled for all RS-232 modes and RS-485 intermediate stations.

If RS-485 mode is used, the differential twisted pair (TxD+/RxD+ and TxD-/RxD-) is formed by
connecting plus-to-plus and minus-to-minus.

RS-485 Mode Line Driver Control

The transmit line driver can be automatically turned on and off based on data availability in the
UART output FIFO. This mode can be enabled in the BIOS Setup utility. The transmit line driver
can be enabled in the BIOS Setup utility.
