Enhanced BIOS POST
Toshiba incorporates an enhanced BIOS POST (Power On Self
Test) into the Tecra 8100 boot process. Once the machine is
powered on, the system executes a testing sequence prior to
loading the operating system, including analysis of the memory
subsystem, display and keyboard controllers, and hard drive. The
POST is a standard function for all PCs; however, Toshiba’s
expertise in chipset, BIOS design, and hardware design enables
Toshiba to customize and optimize this test sequence for each
system. Proprietary features provide a technical support staff with
information (regarding memory subsystem performance,
keyboard controller, docking subsystem and state, etc.), over and
above that analysis carried out on competitive platforms. These
additional data allow the IT administrator to more quickly and
accurately determine the source of a potential fault or prompt the
system to reverse that fault “on the fly.”
Enterprise management software compatibility
Toshiba recognizes the need to manage systems within the context
of the enterprise. By supporting and integrating a wide variety of
system management functions with enterprise management
applications, Toshiba has assured that the Tecra 8100 will work
well within a managed enterprise environment. Integrated DMI
support provides extensive system information to DMI-enabled
enterprise management applications. In addition, plug-ins enable
enterprise management applications such as Unicenter TNG,
Tivoli TME 10, and Openview NNM to see and understand DMI
system management data. With these plug-ins, detailed health
information about the Tecra 8100 can be received and understood
by these applications and appropriate action taken.
