Dial indicator for measuring axial force applied to tailstock sleeve
(fig. 5.6)
(herein after called indicator) enables:
- adjusting of the axial force intensity acting on the tailstock sleeve in dependence on
the workpiece mass mounted between centres
relevant component of the cutting force.
- measuring of this force, increasing due to thermal dilatation of the workpiece.
The equipment proves advantageous in all shops engaged in heavy duty work where long and heavy workpieces are being
handled.
Adjusting procedure of the axial force intensity acting on the tailstock sleeve.
When the workpiece is mounted between centres
and turned in longitudinal direction towards the headstock,
shift out
the tailstock sleeve in this way so that the pointer on the scale of the indicator will show the power intensity „F“ which
corresponds to 50% of the force action of workpiece mass „m“.
(
F
= m .
g
, where
g
= 10 metres per square sec. - acceleration of gravity )
In turning in the longitudinal direction towards the tailstock it is necessary to add to above mentioned counted force the
traverse force in longitudinal direction (axial component of the cutting force).
In turning workpieces of a light mass (in case when the cutting force is higher then the 50% force action of the workpiece
mass) the circumferential cutting force component should be determined or designed on the basis of chip cross section
minus the 50% force action of workpiece mass.
The scale of the indicator 6 is calibrated up to the force intensity of 70 000 N.
Precaution:
The measured value on the measuring device can differ in reality about cca.
15%. Due to setting and passive resistance on
the tailstock sleeve the pointer must not unconditionally return on the zero into initial position.
CAUTION: The maximum axial force
acting on the tailstock sleeve in turning operation is
50 000 N
and never exceed
70 000 N (e.g. by thermal dilatation).
The lathe must be stopped if the axial force intensity
acting on the tailstock sleeve gets near
70 000 N
. (It is possible to change the axial force intensity by tailstock sleeve shift.)
In turning between centres with
application of a driving plate, the double cutting force must be calculated .
Example of axial force calculation acting on tailstock sleeve:
The workpiece of the max. mass of 5 000 kg is turned towards the headstock direction. (The cutting force has not to be used
in the calculation because it operates against the gravity force of workpiece mass).
When the apex angle of the centre
= 90° the tailstock sleeve should be tightened as long as the pointer on the scale 43
indicates 25 000 - 26 000 N, e.i. 25 kN.
The axial force determination for workpieces of different masses, held in the face-plate and in the chuck should be
done by analogy.
Note: Screws 5 fasten the top and bottom positions of tailstock. As the tailstock will not be used in extra -
axial position let these screws tighten permanently.
Taper adaptor bush of the tailstock
sleeve
(hereinafter called taper adaptor fig. 5.7) - is designed for drill
clamping.
(It must be ordered together with the lathe, the additional mounting is impossible).
