System Operation 

 

Starting the System 

Follow these steps for proper initialization of the system: 

1)  Verify that all connections between the PC and the OCT Base Unit are safe and secure (see chapter 2) 

and switch the PC on. 

2)  Start the base unit by pushing the POWER switch on the base unit’s back panel to the “

I

” Position. 

Verify that the standby button/indicator on the front turns red, then press the standby button. Wait for 
30 seconds until the PC has recognized the hardware. The Standby button and Sys OK indicator will 
turn 

green. 

Note:

 After switching off the power supply with the power switch on the back panel, always wait for 10 

seconds before switching it back on again. 

3)  Start the ThorImage

®

 OCT software application (see ThorImage

®

 OCT software manual for details). 

4)  After loading the program, the software performs a warm up and initial calibration procedure. During 

the warm up, the internal light source is off and the system performs a dark current measurement. Next, 
the light source is switched on (“SLD ON” LED will illuminate) and stabilized with respect to temperature 
and the related performance parameters. The warm up takes approximately 10 seconds to complete.

Note:

 If any of the conditions mentioned below should occur after following the above procedure, please refer 

to Chapter 7: Troubleshooting: 

- 

Interlock indicator lights up red 

- 

Sys OK indicator is blinking 

- 

SLD ON indicator is blinking 

 

 

Basic Adjustments 

Upon receiving a complete SD-OCT system from Thorlabs, the reference length is adjusted so that OCT imaging 
in air is possible simply by adjusting the focus to the region of interest. If the reference arm length no longer 
matches the sample arm length, the following procedure will aid you to a good basic adjustment. For OCT 
imaging through refractive media, e.g. water or glass, please refer to chapter 4.3.2. 

 

Adjusting the Focus 

For a coarse adjustment of the focus, place a suitable sample underneath the scanner, e.g. the IR viewing card 
delivered with the system. The sample monitor in the ThorImage

®

 OCT software application will display a 

fraction of the card. Adjust the height of the imaging scanner with respect to the card by adjusting the focus 
block of the OCT-STAND (see Figure 28) to obtain a sharp image.
