General
Safety
Instructions
Apply these procedures whenever operating GSE on ramp:
Only drive or operate GSE if you are trained and authorized for that specific equipment type.
GSE must not be moved or driven across path of:
•
Taxiing aircraft
•
Embarking and disembarking passengers on the ramp.
2.1.2.2
Basic
Operating
Requirements
for
GSE
1. Operators shall check all GSE assigned to them prior to initial use, in particular the “parking”
brakes, rubber protective bumpers, and safety systems.
2. Do not carry extra personnel during GSE movement without an approved seat - apply the “no seat-
no ride” principle.
3. Do not operate GSE while using hand-held Portable Electronic Devices (PEDs).
4. GSE shall only be used for its intended purpose.
5. GSE shall never move across the path of a taxiing aircraft, or embarking and disembarking pas-
sengers.
6. Do not drive GSE with lifting devices in the raised position, except for final positioning onto the air-
craft.
7. Do not operate the platform while in motion.
8. Do not allow any GSE (e.g., tractor, pallet transporters, baggage/cargo carts and dollies) to move
or be positioned under the aircraft fuselage.
9. When GSE is positioned at or near the aircraft the parking brake shall be applied with the gear
selector in park or neutral, and, if equipped, wheel chocks installed.
10. If the GSE is equipped with stabilizers, ensure they are deployed before operation. Deploy other
safety devices if fitted.
11. A “NO TOUCH” policy (i.e. the GSE shall not touch the aircraft), shall be employed for all GSE
types with the exception of passenger loading devices, except where restricted by aircraft type.
12. When positioning GSE, ensure that a clearance is maintained between the GSE and the aircraft to
allow for vertical movement of the fuselage during the entire ground handling process.
13. All safety rails must be fully retracted/lowered during positioning and removal where possible.
14. After positioning equipment on the aircraft, raise or extend all safety rail/s on conveyor belts, load-
ers and other elevated devices, except where restricted by aircraft type.
15. Turn off the vehicle engine once the GSE is positioned, unless required for equipment operation.
CAUTION:
When operating any equipment, check the aircraft for possible damage in the
equipment contact zone before bringing the equipment up to the aircraft.
Immediately report any damage found. Do not continue to approach the aircraft with
any GSE in the area where damage has been found.
Use all safety devices fitted on GSE (e.g., proximity sensors, bumpers, handrails,
stabilizers, etc.) during aircraft handling and servicing.
Ensure protective rubber bumpers ARE NOT compressed against aircraft fuselage.
