Cleaning the Heads
The tape read/write heads can be cleaned using either of two methods: using a
cleaning cartridge kit, or using Freon TF and a swab. Each of these methods are
described here.
Using a Cleaning Kit
Use Tecmar Model 300XL Head Cleaning Kit to clean the heads using a cleaning
cartridge. The kit contains cleaning solution, and a cleaning cartridge with a
cleaning pad that contacts the heads when the cartridge is loaded into the drive.
Using Freon TF
The tape heads are accessible at the front of the drive through the cartridge slot.
To clean the heads using Freon TF and a swab, the heads must be moved out to
the docked position. Use the following procedure.
1. Using your finger, push in on the front edge of the cartridge baseplate
(Figure 4). Keep pushing until you feel some resistance, and feel and hear a
distinct click.
2. Release the baseplate. The baseplate slides outward, moving the head to the
docked position.
3. Look inside the tape door opening and locate the tape heads (the horizontal
stripes shown in Figure 4). The heads are approximately five inches inside
the tape door and on the left. The areas to be cleaned are the read and write
heads, and the vertical white stripes on both sides of the heads.
4. Wet a swab with Freon TF and wipe using an up and down motion.
5. Use a dry swab to remove any residue.
6. Move the heads back to the undocked position by pressing in on the cartridge
baseplate until you feel resistance, and feel and hear a distinct click. Release
the plate.
The head is latched in the undocked position and ready for normal use.
