2.5.1 The importance and benefits of physical exercise
Sedentary living and bad eating habits
steadily debilitate our physical abilities and
lead to increased body weight. The role
played by exercise in preventing major
diseases has been known for some time, as
has the fact that sedentariness is a prime
cause of ill health - in fact it has been
recognized and labeled as an actual illness:
hypokinesia.
Exercising regularly and practicing the right
habits (a balanced diet, moderate alcohol
intake, no smoking) are essential to
achieving and maintaining physical and
mental well-being and preventing most of
the pathologies afflicting industrialized
society (cardiovascular diseases, obesity
and muscle and bone diseases).
The basic components of physical exercise
are:
-
cardiovascular (or aerobic) exercise,
-
strengthening or toning muscles,
-
stretching (see section 2.5.3);
any self-respecting program should include
all three components, in different proportions
depending on the goal you want to achieve.
The XT PRO line of equipments let you do
cardiovascular (or aerobic) workouts, that is,
exercise large masses of muscles (legs, arms
and torso) through continual, rhythmic
contractions, while at the same time
stimulating your heart and respiratory and
circulatory systems. Other types of aerobic
exercise are swimming, cross-country skiing,
cycling and rowing.
The main benefits of doing the right kind of
exercise regularly can be summed up as:
A greater feeling of physical well-being
and agility, with positive impact on mood
and self-esteem.
Improved capacity to sustain physical
effort, even routine ones like climbing the
stairs at home or office, without getting
tired.
A change in body composition, with a
lower percentage of body fat and a higher
amount of muscle tissue.
Burning more calories during the day,
which is important for keeping weight
stable or losing it.
Regulating blood pressure, thanks to
better-toned blood vessel walls.
Changes in lipid composition, with fewer
triglycerides and less cholestorol,
lessening the possibility of
atherosclerosis.
