CMOS:
Complementary Metal Oxide Semiconductor; a special RAM* chip for non-volatile*
storage of a PC’s “vital statistics” like hard disk* size, amount and type of main memory*, etc.
COMMAND SET:
a set of instructions that tells a program to perform a specific action/function;
menu items are also often referred to as commands.
CPU:
a PC’s main operating device that interprets and performs instructions - the so-called
“brain” of your computer.
DISC-AT-ONCE:
refers to writing a complete disc in one go using a continuous data stream;
however, any remaining space on a CD-R or DVD-R is lost as the disc cannot be written to
again.
DVD:
abbreviation of Digital Versatile Disc. An optical disc of extremely high recording density,
providing up to 4.7 GB of storage capacity per side. Variants include write-once and rewritable
types such as DVD-R*, DVD-RW*, DVD-RAM*, DVD+R* and DVD+RW*.
DVD-R:
a write-once DVD* that can be recorded and played back by DVD-R/RW writers and
certain DVD video recorders. Fully compatible with your TDK DVD-R/RW Writer.
DVD-RW:
a rewritable DVD* that can be recorded and played back by DVD-R/RW writers and
certain DVD video recorders. More than 1,000 times rewritable. Fully compatible with your TDK
DVD-R/RW Writer.
DVD-RAM:
a rewritable DVD* that can be recorded and played back by DVD-R/RW writers and
certain DVD video recorders. More than 100,000 times rewritable. Available as disc or cartridge.
FIRMWARE:
ROM*-stored system software (part of the PC’s operating system), often used to
control the behaviour of a particular system when it is first switched on.
HARD DISK:
the PC’s main data storage medium whose capacity (space or size) is measured
in megabytes (older PCs) or gigabytes (newer PCs).
HOST:
a computer or other device that acts as a source of information or signals for another
(e.g. a CD-ROM drive supplying a CD-RW writer with data).
