Keys, Codes and Serial Numbers
Keys, codes and serial numbers serve as unique identifiers of your system.
Connected to this, the scope of delivery and services of PC and its compo-
nents are stored with respect to the system at the manufacturer. In the case
of software components, they are part of the security system to prevent ille-
gal and uncontrolled distribution of your software.
They are also important indicators that along with different product seals as-
sure you of the authenticity of your purchased system and permit the owner
of the code access to the original software.
Registration and Product Activation
By registering a software product you are indicating to the manufacturer of
the software that you have this licence and that you have acknowledged the
licence conditions. This means that nobody can legally use your licence at
the same time. A registration is not obligatory; almost every manufacturer
offers its customers the possibility to register their name and address.
Your personal information is normally used by the manufacturer to inform
you of their latest products and program versions. This is in contrast to prod-
uct activation. Product activation was introduced by Microsoft and on suc-
cessful activation releases the limited scope of functionality of the acquired
product for utilisation.
It thus goes a decisive step further than registration. Product activation is a
protection mechanism for the reduction of professional software fraud. At the
same time, consumers are protected against the use of illegal software
products. Persons using or distributing illegal software damage not only
themselves but also the global economy.
Note: Certain Microsoft® software products included in your computer sys-
tem can contain technical measures for copyright protection. In such a case
you can not make complete use of this or these product(s) if you do not suc-
cessfully conclude the product activation process. The product activation
process and the Microsoft data protection regulations are shown in detail at
the first start of every affected product, a reinstallation of the affected product
or after a renewal/change in the hardware included in the system. The acti-
vation process can be concluded via the Internet or by telephone. This can
result in additional costs being incurred.
