DRIVELINE REASSEMBLY
Use care when installing the U-joint bearing cups
so the needle bearings remain in place. It is
advisable to smear a light coating of heavy
grease into the cups to help retain the needle
bearings. If the cup set, on either side of the
cross, will not go in enough for the snap rings to
be installed, it usually indicates one or more
needles fell and are in the bottom of the cup
restricting installation.
NOTE:
The blind splines will have to be aligned as
follows as the shaft is put back together.
IMPORTANT
There is a blind spline between the rear and front
half of the driveline. Align the two pinched male
splines on the mower, half of the driveline with
the open female spline in the tractor half and
slide together. The female open spline is 1800
around the shaft from the grease fitting.
Use an SAE multipurpose lithium base grease
and lubricate all three fittings on the driveline
before reinstallation.
Reassembly and reinstallation on the mower is a
reverse order of disassembly instructions.
GEARBOX REBUILDING
NOTE:
This gearbox is not adjustable. If backlash or
rolling torque is considered excessive, the
gearbox should be rebuilt or replaced.
GEARBOX DISASSEMBLY
Prepare the mower for gearbox removal by
following all instructions under Belt Replacement
on page 14.
1. Remove all four bolts retaining the gearbox
bracket to the top of the deck and remove the
gearbox bracket assembly.
2. Remove the brackets and shield from the
gearbox, remove both pipe plugs, lay the box on
one side and drain all old oil.
3. Remove all 9 socket head bolts securing the
gearbox halves together. Tap the seam with a
soft wood or plastic hammer to break the seal
and split the box halves.
4. Disassemble the gearbox, remove sealer from
both case halves, wash parts in a clean solvent
and inspect for signs of wear or damage.
GEARBOX REASSEMBLY
1. Replace needed parts, always using NEW
SEALS.

2. Apply a 1/16 inch (1.6 mm) bead of liquid
gasket material (Locktite® 504 or 515 or
equivalent) to the flat surface of the bottom case
half only.
IMPORTANT
DO NOT allow liquid gasket material to get into
the seal recesses in the housing.
