LEATS
Cleats must not be used for lifting the boat;
they
are intended for docking or mooring use only.
When lifting the boat always keep the bow higher
than the stern to drain the exhaust lines and to
prevent water from running forward through the
manifold and into the engine where it can become
trapped. It may seem expedient to lift only the stern
when changing a propeller, but this can result in
water entering the engine cylinders, causing
hydrostatic lock and resulting in possible engine
failure. Even a small amount of water in the engine
can cause rust and is to be avoided.
With fiberglass boats, severe gelcoat crazing or
more serious hull damage can occur during
launching and hauling if pressure is created on the
gunwales by the slings. Flat, wide belting-type slings
and spreaders long enough to keep pressure from
the gunwales are necessary. Cable-type slings
should be avoided. Do not place the slings where
they may lift on underwater fittings.
Never hoist the boat with an appreciable amount of
water in the bilge. Fuel and water tanks should
preferably be empty, especially if of large capacity.

UPPORTING

A cradle is the ideal support for the boat whenever
it is not in the water. Properly designed and
constructed, it will provide support at the proper
points, which is essential to avoid stress on the
hull. Do not rest boat on underwater fittings.
