You can now see and select the refresh rate you wish to run your screen at via the third icon
down.
There are several reasons why you might wish to change the refresh:
•
Your monitor may be struggling to display the screen at the present refresh rate.
•
Your monitor may be able to handle a higher refresh rate (giving a less flickery
picture) than the current setting.
•
At high resolutions, you may not be able to get the maximum colour depth and
the highest refresh rate. Sometimes dropping down the refresh rate will allow a
greater number of colours to be shown without losing desktop space by
switching to a lower resolution.
•
You might have used up all of the available bandwidth. Reducing the refresh
rate lowers the amount of memory required to generate the display.
You will also notice that when you click the Change button to switch to the selected mode,
the screen fades out, then in again.
If you set the monitor type incorrectly the display might look greatly distorted or you might
simply get no picture displayed at all, please take a look at the Troubleshooting section at
the back of this guide to remedy matters if this happens.
Euro support
Unlike earlier versions of RISC OS, RISC OS 4 supports the Euro symbol in all the standard
ROM fonts. This gives you access to serif (Trinity), sans-serif (Homerton) and monospaced
(Corpus) versions of the symbol in all the common weights. This should allow you to find a
Euro symbol for most typographic requirements.
To enter a Euro symbol from the keyboard, press <ALT>-E for the font specific version, or
<ALT>-164 for the standard Euro symbol.
Year 2000 compliance
As supplied, RISC OS 4 is fully year 2000 (Y2K) compliant.
Should an application (particularly internet software) show "This application is not
Millennium compliant" then you should contact the application's manufacturer and request
an update.
