4. REPAIRING TORN AREAS
A. While many of the seams in the Aero Compact Liferafts are glued with a strong adhesive,
others are of welded construction. Once welded, these seams cannot be opened. A
correctly welded seam is such that no discernable interface between the two polyurethane
surfaces will remain.
Note: A correctly contructed seam or assembly of polyurethane proofed fabric
and polychloroprene adhesive is so strong that damage to the proofed
coat can result from careless attempts to tear apart connected surfaces,
particularly when loads are applied in a manner not normally found during
service.
Patches
Repair patches must extend at least 1in. (25mm) beyond the perimeter of the damage, e.g. if the
diameter of a jagged hole is 1in. (25mm), the patch must be at least 3in. (75mm) in diameter. If
a straight tear is 1in. (25mm) long, the patch must be at least 3in. (75mm) x 2in. (50mm).
‘L’ shaped tears are to be treated as holes, reckoning the dimensions , taken between the ends of
the tear, and the ‘diameter’.
Applying Patches
If the patch is to repair a hole or cut which lies along the edge of a seam, then the patch must
cross the seam and extend across the width of the seam to within .2in. (5mm) of the far edge.
The patch must be thoroughly rolled down along the edge of the seam tape after assembly using
as edge wheel or stitch wheel so as to avoid leaks. (See Figs. 1&2)
A. Cut the patch to size
B. Prepare and clean the area as described above.
C. When the final coat develops an aggressive tack, place the patch in position and roll it down
into firm contact with a hand roller.
D. After a repair to an inflatable chamber has been allowed sufficient time to cure, carry out a
pressure holding test.
