System Configuration Suggestions
Use the PPC7A in a development rack on its own at first
, before integrating it into a system
with
other cards. This enables you to prove operation of the board in isolation before tackling any system
configuration issues.
The power supply to the RTC on the PPC7A
is fed from the VSTANDBY pin on the VMEbus. VMEbus
compliance requires this voltage to be 5V
±
5%.
Link Configuration
You are recommended to use the default link configuration (see Chapter 4) for the first power-up. This
will enable you to prove the board’s operation before tackling any configuration issues.
Read Chapter 4 - Configuration before altering your PPC7A’s user configurable link settings to check
that all the settings are correct for your application.
If you are using the SCSI bus, you are recommended to locate the PPC7A
at one end and enable the
terminator by fitting link E13. If you want to use the PPC7A
somewhere other than at the end of the
SCSI bus, ensure that E13 is not fitted. Fitting E13 when the PPC7A
is not located at the end of a SCSI
bus may cause erroneous SCSI operation.
Air-cooled PPC7A
1. Insert the board into the required slot in the rack or enclosure.
$
Note:
The default link configuration requires the board to be inserted into system slot 1.
2. Push the board
firmly
home to ensure the connectors mate properly with the backplane.
3. Tighten the captive screws at the top and bottom of the front panel to secure the board in
position.
$
Note:
Pulling on any front panel cable connections could inadvertently disconnect the board if it is not
secured.
4. Ensure that the board receives sufficient air-flow, as detailed in Appendix A.
5. If you need to operate your board on an extender card, fit an additional fan to supply the
necessary air-flow.
6. To ensure optimum operation of the board with regard to EMC:
a. When taking I/O connections from the front panel connectors, or when the board is
operating on a VME bus extender card, ensure a connection is made between the front
panel and the chassis ground of the system
b. When taking I/O connections from P2, the Radstone P2 accessory kit (or some
equivalent system) can be used. See Appendix A for more details on the P2 accessory
kit
Conduction Cooled PPC7A
1. Insert the board into the required slot in the conduction-cooled enclosure.
$
Note:
The default link configuration requires the board to be inserted into system slot 1.
2. Push the board firmly home to ensure the connectors mate properly with the backplane.
